I had the honor of fishing on the El Jefe out of Los Suenos Costa Rica a 38 foot Out Island dayrunner with a top notch crew and the owner of the boat and operation along with his daughter this past weekend. Although 2 days of fishing was hardly enough I managed to catch one billfish each day I went out. We only fished about 6 hours each day as time was an issue with my trip but the time spent was phenomenal and productive. The captain of the boat Victor Julio Lopez is one of the top 5 billfish captains in the world as written in Marlin magazine and is for certain one of the best captains I have ever fished with to date. His tactics enabled me to catch a 130 lb sailfish and a 250 lb black marlin on 20 lb test almost making the task easy. I was amazed at the quality of the crew Daniel Arrieta was the first mate and the owner of the boat was very helpful to me in my excitement. Dr. Decarol Williamson set the patterns for the teaser/ballyhoo combinations in the trolling spread. Once a fish had been raised which we only managed to raise 2 fish on the trip he without panic dropped baits back to both fish. I could see that Dr. Williamson was a very professional angler in his actions setting up the fish on 20 lb test and Penn 20 International reels. The equipment onboard his operation is top notch and I tried to sneak in a photo of his rigging techniques on the ballyhoo but some things are secret and best kept that way. Unfortunately this is not the peak season for fishing in Costa Rica but none the less I had sore arms on the plane ride home. If you ever get a chance to go to Costa Rica make it a point to stay no less than one week. The scenery will amaze you the people are very friendly and the food is out of this world. El Jefe Sportfishing is just getting underway in Costa Rica and only waiting for the season to get started and will become the best package available once they get into full swing. The blue water line has been slowly moving in over the past several weeks. This Sunday fishing was between 20 and 25 nautical miles from shore. The early mornings are very calm with winds picking up after 1:00P.M. These are the billfishing results as reported by the sport-fishing boats captains. Overall rating for this weekend was poor to fair.
1.Pica Pleitos 36ft. Cabo 5 releases out of 8 hits.
2.La Sirena 35ft. Viking 5 releases out of 9 hits.
3.La Gipsy 32ft. Blackfin 3 releases out of 6 hits.
4.Gato Felix 30ft. Cat. 2 releases out of 2 hits.

Our Pacific bill-fish/sailfish fishing charters fleet is docked at the new marina named the Pez Vela Marina. This new marina uses the same outlet as Guatemala's main Pacific port, Puerto Quetzal, and is located next to it. This is the only sport fishing boat marina, on the Pacific coast, that has calm saltwater access without going though the dangerous old outlet near Puerto Iztapa, where boats need to stop and wait for the right set of waves that will allow their 'safe passage'. When out on a family sport-fishing vacation or with a group of buddies, do not put them at risk by “shooting the outlet”. Use the new marinas outlet with calm waters.

ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO
IN GENERAL: Our 84º blue water is still at 10 miles, holding lots of bait and fish. The seas are very calm and the weather has been cooperative.
The roosterfish action has just been incredible, and we are even getting a blue marlin or two each week, in a month they are not supposed to be anywhere near here. Yet, we have so few people fishing, we are only averaging about 2 to 3 boats a day for the entire 'fleet'.
Other than the incredible roosterfish action (with nobody fishing for them), the sailfish are holding steady at 1 to 2 fish a day per boat. John Dickerson, from San Antonio, fished with Adolpho, on the panga “Dos Hermanos” for one day. They raised three sailfish fish, caught and released two.

Extremely light fishing pressure was reported in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo last week. September is normally a very rainy time but this year and last week as no exception, the weather has been unusually calm and dry. Sea conditions were favorable. Captain Adolofo Espinosa reported lots of Dorado and Sailfish close to shore along with two Big Blue Marlin. The inshore fishing continues to be red hot with big schools of ROOSTERFISH and YELLOWTAIL JACKS being found all along the coast. The Blue water is within 1 miles of shore and there continues to be ample schools of bait fish. Barring any unforeseen weather event, this year Ixtaap Zihuatanejo Total Tag & Release Tournament promises to be action packed as it was two years ago when 4 boats landed and released 71 Billfish in three days of fishing. Good boats are still available and interested anglers are encouraged to call or email our office for details, registration and hotel availability.

The Ixtapa Zihuatanejo area received its first real storm of the season last week which closed the port for three days. On the other days, very light fishing activity was reported. Captain Adolofo Espinosa did manage one 245 LB blue Marlin for his only offshore outing. The fish was hooked on a spinning rod with 50 Lb test Power Pro and the fight lasted well over 2 Hours. Captain Adolofo also reported the arrival of good numbers of DORADO and a generous supply of SAILFISH. Inshore the weather prevented any attempts at ROOSTERFISH or JACKS.

Our group of Micheal Spencer and friends from
Georgia and Columbia went out on the La Piragua
31ft.Bertram for a good days fishing excursion. They
traveled out about 30 miles before coming upon good
blue water. During the day they raised 14 Pacific
Sailfish of which 9 took the bait and were released.
Mike explained that his friends from Georgia have
their own 29ft.cat. and do a lot of tuna fishing. They
had the pictures to prove it (some real nice 60 to
90lb. yellow-fins). This however was their first time
doing real billfishing. They had read a lot of
articles from Saltwater Magazine and stated that
Guatemala is for real!! Come back again guys and soon!

this boat. This multiple award winner won a record in
2002 for bringing in a 225lb. Marlin on a fly rod and
15lb. tackle. It also placed third in the 2002
Presidential Challenge.

lunch items and drinks including beer. Will supply
wine upon request.
Two other boats had some good Marlin Action. The boats were both from Artmarina (Classic and Magic);however,both Marlin failed to take the bait.

IN GENERAL: The 84º blue water is about 10 miles off the beach. Each boat is
averaging about 1 to 2 sailfish a day. There has been an abundance of bait this year and, even though the blue marlin prefer the cooler 78º winter temperatures, they have been sticking around.
Ernesto Perez, from Mexico City, fished with Luis Marcial on the panga “Gringo
Loco” for two days this week. On the first day, they checked out the roosterfish action in the surf line to see if the outstanding bite was still holding up. The rains last week had limited the visibility, but they found the water had cleaned up a little. They caught 10 roosters averaging about 30- to 35-pounds.
The second day they fished the blue water, catching an approximate 225-pound
blue marlin off one of the current lines holding debris washed out of the rivers.
A few dorado are starting to show, and we are hoping we will get a few more rains and a little more substance to the current lines.

Welcome to what we think is the Flyrod Sailfish Capital of the World! Starting with our next condition report, Iztapa, Guatemala, will be part of our ongoing up-to-date news. Located on the Pacific Coast, Iztapa is next to Mexico's southern border. It's approximately 2 hours from Miami, 3 hours from Houston, 3.5 hours from Atlanta and 4.5 hours from Los Angeles.

IN GENERAL:
The fish are here, if you can get around the short rain squalls. Water color and temperature (84-85 degrees) are perfect, and the boats have been fishing about 30 miles out. With our season just beginning, in the past week only two boats have been fishing. One had double digit releases on sails, and both had marlin in the pattern, but could not connect. Sailfish are showing up a lot more frequently over the past couple of weeks with double digit days. Dorado are still being caught on most trips, but are more scarce than usual, which leaves more time for sails and marlin. There has been no inshore fishing activity the last week. We have been scouting snook areas, but the fishing is slow inshore. Anglers looking for a new challenge should note that Continental Airlines has been running specials the past two weeks on fares to Guatemala.
