ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO
IN GENERAL: A few porpoise schools were found straight out in front about 8 miles. Bird school on the leading edge had everyone thinking tuna as the teasers were dragged through the melee. When the multiple sails appeared in the wake behind the teasers everyone had to scramble, changing over from tuna to billfish flies in a hurry. Back on the beach, clouds of birds crashing on baitfish fleeing from hungry jacks proved that the beach fishing was another Zihuatanejo option.

ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO
IN GENERAL: The fishing has been in a holding pattern this last week. Everything is fairly slow.
The 78º blue water is still at 12 miles, but the fleet is averaging only 1 or 2 sailfish per day per boat. The tuna have also disappeared. A few dorado are being taken as an incidental catch while trolling for the sailfish. They are mature fish of 25- to 35-pounds and not schooled up.
The roosterfish bite has picked up. Several nice fish between 30- and 45-pounds are being taken about 25 miles south, in an area called “the antennas.”

Report Description:
The ON again / OFF again pattern continued after the turn of the moon in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. The full moon and some colder waters temperatures spelled a slowdown in the SAILFISH activity but an increase in the MARLIN activity over the past two weeks.
Returning anglers Ron and Lois Reinhardt fishing with captain Chiro and Efraine on the Vamonos 3 had an excellent day with Lois landing three SAILFSIH and Ron landing one SAILFISH. After landing on shore Mr Rienhardt pulled out his spinning outfit along with some wild eye soft body shad and while fishing in front of the Las Brisas hotel landed a wide assortment of Snapper and Grouper and fought one fish for over 30 minutes only to have to bite through the hook before he had time to beach it. Mr. Reinhardt estimated the snapper to be close to 30 lbs.. Captains Adolofo and Cheva on the Dos Hermanos 1 & 2 teamed up for 15 SAILFISH and 11 Dorados ( one dorado scaling in at 77 lbs ) in 14 offshore days of fishing and 36 BONITOS, 1 GROUPER, 4 ROOSTERFISH, 12 RAINBOW RUNNERS and 12 YELLOWTAIL JACKS in 7 Inshore charter days. Mr. Harvey fishing aboard the Illusion released 2 SAILFISH and also landed an estimated 175 lb Blue Marlin. First time visitors to Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, Mr Mcintyre landed one SAILFISH on his first day out loosing another two. One his second day out the group lost a nice blue marlin and got skunked on their third day offshore. Captain Arturo on the Janeth fishing with French angler Mr. Cinquin 2 SAILFISH, 1 DORADO, 15 YELLOWTAIL JACKS, 17 BONITOS, and 4 GROUPER in 7 days of fishing. Mr. Kirk Wagner fishing aboard the Intruzza landed an estimated 600 lb Blue Marlin on the 17th and Angler Frank Erickson also fishing aboard the Intruzza landed and estimated 500 lb Blue on the very next day. The winter turnover in water temperatures looks like it may be in place and this will spell some trophy fishing ahead for the area.
Ixtapa Zihuatanejo weather: Seasonably beautiful with gentle winds and temps in the upper 80's
Sea Conditions: Calm
Bait Supply: Good
Sincerely,
Stan Lushinsky

Report Description:
ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO
IN GENERAL: The sailfish bite has been steady, but not up to expected standards for this time of the year. The 78º blue water is still about 12 miles, but we are only averaging a couple of sailfish per day for each boat. A few blue marlin are being caught also.
George Thomas of Chicago got a 50 pound bull dorado while fishing on the cruiser Yellowfin II with Captain Ruben.
Fly fishing has been slow in the blue water, but the beach fishing has been exciting and a lot of fun. In my Suburban, I have been taking my clients about 45 minutes North of Zihuatanejo to a 2-mile long beach called Saladitas. There are at least a thousand birds, plus another 500 pelicans working the huge concentrations on sardines there. We have been getting sierras, jack crevalle, black skipjack tuna to 6 pounds, and green jacks. The beach has only about 2 foot waves and reminds me of the East Cape of Baja. It is an ideal situation for an 8 or 9wt rod. If you are interested in booking one of the Beach Trips give Yvonne a call at 877 772 2252 for more details.

Report Description:
ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO
IN GENERAL: Early this last week a 74 cold water current moved in and pushed the blue water way out. The fishing was severely affected, and most notable, was the three day International Sailfish Tournament. Of 100 boats in the event, only about 150 sailfish were caught.
Later in the week, the blue water came back in to about 22 miles, and the next day it was at 8 miles. The fishing has definitely improved. Most boats are now averaging a couple of sailfish, with a few dorado showing up. Captain Calli, on the “Vamonos II” managed 4 sailfish and two dorado for his clients on his best day.
The cooler water has been beneficial for the yellowfin tuna fishing, however. Every day at least one 200-pound tuna is hitting the docks. The tuna are holding under the porpoise and anywhere from 3 miles off the beach to 30 miles.
Few roosterfish are being caught, however, Captain Seis, on the panga “Moramy,” managed a 35 pound fish, on a slow trolled live bait, at the entrance to Marina Ixtapa.
A couple of other pangas reported huge areas of large jack crevalle near the airport and White Rocks.

Report Description:
With the oncoming full moon and hard month of fishing pressure, the fishing last week marked a bit of a slowdown as compared to the wide open offshore bite in January. A decrease in the schools of bait was also noticed this past week. Boats on average raised 2 - 3 Sailfish per day with some ' 0' strike days thrown in as well. Captains reported good action on one day followed by a complete shutdown on the next. Still some anglers return with respectable catches. Returning New Hampshire angler, Doug Clark, fishing aboard the Moramay landed 5 SAILFISH, 1 DORADO, 1 ROOSTERFISH 1 YELLOWTAIL JACK and several BONITOS in 6 days of fishing. Captain Adolofo along with angler Mr. Panix landed 4 SAILFISH, YELLOWTAIL JACKS and 1 ROOSTERFISH in 3 days of fishing and additional 20 JYELLOWTAIL JACKS 1 ROOSTER FISH, 9 RAINBOW RUNNERS, and 22 BONITOS while fishing 2 other inshore days. Mr. Nichols group fishing aboard the La Bamba and The Marlin Azul managed 7 SAILFISH in 5 DAYS of fishing. French Angler Mr Soussaol finished his final two days aboard the Super panga Leydy, landing 4 SAILFISH . Illinois angler Randy Cottrell also fishing aboard the Leydy landed 1 SAILFISH on his first day offshore. Flyfishing angler John Vangheem fishing aboard the Monica had several shots at SAILFISH on a fly in One day. Returning SCI member Mr. Gary Christensen fishing aboard the Janeth landed 4 JACKS and 3 BONITOS on one inshore day and 1 SAILFISH on one offshore day. Overall the captains reported working very hard for a few strikes. The inshore appears to by picking up a bit with better numbers of Roosterfish being raised. Late February, March and April are BIG FISH months for Marlin and Tuna and interested angler are encouraged to contact our office for boat availability.
Ixtapa Zihuatanejo weather: Uncommonly windy for this time of year. Temps in the 90's
Sea Conditions: Moderate
Bait Supply: Fair to Good.

Stan Lushinsky

Report Description:
ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO
IN GENERAL: The 80º blue water got pushed out several miles early this week when we were hit by a couple of days of unseasonable rain and wind. The fishing dropped off until we found the fish again. By mid-week we were back at it strong, with the boats each averaging about 3 to 4 sailfish a day.
Dave Horn from Michigan fished with Santiago on the panga “Gitana” for 4 days. Even though he was fishing a couple of days under adverse conditions, he still managed 15 sails released, and a couple of nice dorado for dinner. His best day, was on his last day of fishing when they raised 15 sailfish and he released 9.
Dr. John Adams, of Spokane, Wash., fly-fished with Martin and I on the panga “Isamar.” He hooked three of the five fish which we teased to the boat and we raised a total of seven.
The dorado action has picked up, but they are still only incidental catches because the mature fish do not school together. They are averaging about 20 pounds.
A few yellowfin tuna have been taken, but in random areas. One day they are at 25 miles, and the next we find them at 10 miles. We are getting into the season where they should start making a strong showing soon.

ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO
IN GENERAL: It sounds like the proverbial “broken record,” but it’s a repeat of last week: The 80º blue water is still holding at around 6 miles and the sailfish are cooperating. Almost every boat is jumping between 8 and 12 fish a day, with many boats hooking as many as 7 to 8 fish each.
There are 25- to 30-pound class dorado are being caught, but mostly by trolling. There are few concentrated pods.

Report Description:
The days most anglers wait for arrived last week in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. With Large schools of bait present the SAILFISH showed up in big numbers. In total our fleet ran 58 offshore charters, landing 203 SAILFISH. Equally impressive was the number of SAILFISH that were teased to the fly but not hooked and landed. That number would have taken the opportunities at SAILFISH well over the 500 mark. Leading the charge was returning anglers Ray & son Darren along with friend Mike Visocki who managed to land 35 SAILS and 3 DORADO in 5 days while fishing aboard the super panga Dos Hermanos 2. The trio, while catching some Bonito for bait just outside the harbor, had a estimated 700 Lb Black Marlin take one of their baits right in the prop wash. After a short screaming run the huge fish broke water as well as the 30 lb test line but managed to keep the Bonito. It was a sight that Ray said he will never forget. An additional bonus to the number of SAILFISH they landed was one huge Sail landed by Darren that was estimated at close to 165 lbs.. New York City fly fishing angler, Gary Wendrovski fishing aboard the Vamonos 3 landed three SAILFISH in one day on the fly. Mr. Wayne Miller and Larry Cowles of the Silver Bow Fly Shop along with their group while fishing aboard the super pangas, Janeth, Secuestro, Marfel and Tarpon landed 25 BONITOS on flies as well as a 47' Dorado taken by Bill Williams. Angler Rick Varnell took two 20 lb. YELLOWTAIL jacks on a fly and Mr. Wayne Miller released his first Pacific Sailfish on a fly, a beautiful fish estimated to be in the 120 lb class. Washington state angler Mr. Ron Hammill fishing with captain Sabino on the super panga ' MELS ' landed 6 SAILFISH in two offshore days. Angler Mr Peohlman fishing aboard the Leydy with Captain Candelerio landed 4 SAILFISH in 2 days. Mr Jim Wolf landed 4 SAILFISH in one day while fishing with Captain Jose Vargas on the LA Bamba. Dr. Jim Schmonsky had twin 3 SAILFISH days aboard the La Bamba and Moramay. Returning angler Jerry Burns, fishing 3 days aboard the Dos Hermanos 2 landed 4 Sails, 8 Rainbow runners, 2 Yellowtail Jacks and 8 Bonitos. Washington Angler, Chris Morrison landed 14 Rainbow runners 12 Yellowtail Jacks and 28 Bonitos in 2 inshore days with captain Adolofo and 14 Sails in 2 days while fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 2. Arizona fly fishing angler Steve Brillhart fishing aboard the Monica for four days raised 39 Sailfish releasing 2 fish. Fly fishing partner Erik Cramer fishing aboard the Zapatito Gordo had an equal number of opportunites also landing 2 SAILS in 4 days. First time visitor to Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Paul Collins and Matthew Reid fishing aboard the Vamonos had the single best day, landing 8 Sailfish. Conditions remain near perfect with the majority of the SAILFISH being caught inside of 10 miles. Several Marlin were raised and the Dorado have been spotty. Yellowfin Tuna remain far offshore and the Roosterfish have once again done the disappearing act.
Ixtapa Zihuatanejo weather: Seasonably nice with an occasional passing shower
Sea Conditions: Calm
Bait Supply: Very Good
