Report Description:
A light week for sportfishing charters but the action on Sailfish Tuna and Marlin continued to increase last week. Captain Jose Vargas on the La Bamba along with Angler Larry Lohr was tops for the week posting 8 SAILFISH in three offshore days of fishing .Illinois Angler, David Grubek fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 posted the single best day landing 5 SAILFISH. Not far behind was another Illinois angler Mark Youngren who landed 4 SAILFISH in one day aboard the Vamonos 3 with Captain Chiro. Washington angler, David Nuttall also fishing a long day with Captain Adolofo posted a 3 SAILFISH 3 Yellowfin Tuna day. Inshore remains a puzzler as the Roosterfish have not shown up in any quantity. Angler Bill Linka fish with Captain Adolofo managed an action packed day landing 18 YELLOWTAIL JACKS, 30 BONITOS and 1 SPANISH Mackerel but no roosters. Several nice Marlin and Tuna were also reported by those boats venturing out to the 30 - 40 miles mark.
Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Weather: Beautiful mornings followed by windy afternoons. Temps is the high 80's
Sea Conditions: Calm to Moderate
Bait Supply: Excellent

Report Description:
ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO
IN GENERAL: The dates have been set for our first “Jacks or Better” Roosterfish Tournament in Zihuatanejo. The details can be found at
http://www.bajafly.com/jacksorbetter.htm
The 80º blue water has come within 5 miles. The last two weeks had it
fluctuating between 6 and 8 miles, and we were wondering where the fish were. They have arrived. The sailfish action is almost fantastic. Every boat is getting at least three sails a day, but many others are doing much better. Adolpho, on the panga “Dos Hermanos” released 8, and Jamie on the “Vamonos II had 10 biters,” but was only able to hook and release 6. Beach fishing with flyrods is a little slow, but Jed Ritchy, from Palo Alto, Calif., and I covered several beaches. We had a lot of fun looking for diving birds and Ritchey saw a lot of sites the normal tourist will never experience. We went south to Playa Larga and drove the beach for a few miles to Playa
Blanca. From there we went by dirt road Barra Pototsi, with its 3 miles of mangrove lined lagoon, and finally ended up on the main highway 1.5 hours from Zihuatanejo, in Puerto Vicente Guerrero.
Puerto Vicente Gro. is like stepping back in time at least 75 years ago here in Mexico. It is just a very small fishing village, with a small clear water port.
There are often roosterfish inside the harbor. A snack lunch there, under a palapa palm beach-front restaurant, with fresh caught fish and fresh oysters as big as your hand, is hard to beat.

Report Description:
ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO
IN GENERAL: Late March and on into the end of April is historically a slow time of the year for us because we get a cold green water current in here for about 6 weeks. But, the cold water is gone and the color is blue. With the 78º blue water only a few miles off the beach, we are all wondering why the fishing is so slow. It was slow for all species this last week.
Santiago, on the panga, “Gitana” is releasing a couple of sailfish a day, but he is traveling 22- to 25-miles out to find them. Only a few other boats are even making a one fish a day average.
Even though a couple of blue marlin were taken earlier in the week, the big fish, like the marlin and 200 pound plus tuna have all but disappeared.

Report Description:
ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO
IN GENERAL: The 78º blue water is still holding at 6 to 8 miles, and the overall fishing is picking up. Several boats caught more than three sailfish each day, with Captain Pepino, on the “Whisky II,” releasing five for his best day.
The tuna are out near the 1,000-fathom curve (32 miles), but the action is fantastic when you get there. The fish are ranging in size from 30-pound schoolies, to 250 pounds-plus gorillas. It all just depends on what school of fish you come across.
Anybody who is seriously chasing blue marlin, once they get out to the 1,000 fathom curve, their chance for a big blue is almost a sure thing.
Roosterfish are picking up also. Several have been taken and they are averaging between 30- and 40-pounds.

Report Description:
Conditions continue to improve last week with more and more Sailfish activity being reported by our captains. Although the fish counts and the consistency are still not up to Ixtapa / Zihuatanejo standards , nevertheless there were some good days reports. Leading the pack for the week was returning angler John Bauman who landed 4 SAILFISH with Captain Adolofo on the Dos Hermanos 1 in one day of offshore fishing .
Also posting a very respectable offshore day was Colorado angler Randia Morrow, landing 3 SAILFISH and a handful of Bonitos while fishing with Captain Cheva on the Dos Hermanos 2. Debbie Pavon finished up her week of fishing with Captain Javier on the Marlin Azul by posting a 2 SAILFISH day. Mr. Ray Dennis's group fishing aboard the Marea Azul and Illusion landed 1 DORADO. Angler Barry Scott fishing 2 days aboard the Illusion landed 3 SAILFISH on one day but lost only a single fish on the second. The Tuna bite has moved to within 20 miles of shore and several marlin were also reported last week. The inshore fishery has remains slow last week just a few Yellowtail Jacks being reported.

Report Description:
ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO
IN GENERAL: The 78º blue water is only 6 miles off the beach, but the game fish do not seem to be here. Very few dorado and sailfish are being taken by the fleet each day.
The one exception is the blue marlin and the occasional large tuna. They both prefer the same water temperatures, eat the same sized bait, and the black skipjack tuna seem to be the targeted bait. The skippies are here in abundance. There was one day this week with four blue marlin being taken, and every day is accounting for at least 1. Most are being caught by slow trolling one of the large live baits.
Roosterfish action is also very slow in the surf lines, but this is normal for this time of the year.

Report Description:
ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO
IN GENERAL: The 80º blue water has moved back in, and we found some decent sailfish action at the 18 mile mark. Baja on the Fly client Doug Boutilier, with Captain Martin on the panga “Isamar,” raised five. He was able to tag and release two sailfish using my 14-weight and dorado pattern fly.
The overall sailfish action has definitely picked up, especially when compared to the last three weeks. Arturo, on the panga “Whisky III,” took a very nice dorado of about 55-pounds. Also, a blue marlin or two are being hooked by the fleet every day.
For inshore action, Martin went about 26 miles up the coast and got 10 jack crevalle on spin cast gear and poppers for his client. Roosterfish are still hiding, or simply are just not here.

Report Description:
Cold water continues to dominate the fishing in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Very few SAILFISH were landed last week and the Tuna bite moved far offshore. Inshore, the Roosterfsih have headed for warmer places but the BIG YELLOWTAIL JACKS are providing some measure of action. Although not abundant there were also a few nice Dorado landed last week. French Angler Mr. Dedeurwader fishing with Captain Candelerio 3 DORADOS, 1 SAILFISH and an handful of BONTIOS in 4 days of fishing. Angler Kathy Lynch was one of only a few angler this week to register a SAILFISH. Kathy was fishing aboard the La Bamba. The First Light Anglers group also fishing aboard the LA Bamba did well on BONITOS and also scored a nice 40 lb Wahoo while fishing aboard the Dos Hermanos 2 with Captain Cheva. Captain Arturo Landa on the Janeth provded some YELLOWTAIL JACK action for the group as well. Mr. Vic Kitchingham, from England fishing a second day aboard the Vamonos 3 repeated last week's performance by landing 1 SAILFISH.
Captain Adolofo of the Dos Hermanos 1 fishing with European angler Mr. Marcovic landed 3 SAILFISH, 3 SPANISH MACKEREL, 22 BIG EYE JACKS, 1 YELLOWTAIL JACK, 18 BONITOS and 1 TIGER GROUPER in 4 days of fishing. A few Marlin were reported this week but overall the counts were on the light side for the week. The next few weeks have historically been our peak time for big marlin and tuna and good boats are still available.
