Report Description: Better weather and sea conditions allowed for a slight upswing in both the inshore and offshore fishing last week. Dr. Ed Anderson, of Cambridge, MD, after having a slow day offshore on the Vamanos II, rebounded nicely with Capt. Adolofo landing 2 SAILFISH, 2 DORADO, and released 1 BLUE MARLIN in one day of fishing. Returning angler, Jeff Burham, also fishing with Capt. Adolofo landed 10 BONITOS, 2 SAILFISH and lost 1 ROOSTERFISH. Paul Lundberg of Dallas, TX, fishing with Capt. Chiro and Efraine landed 2 SAILFISH and lost 2 SAILFISH. Capt. Miguel of the Tarpon reported one shark in one offshore day. Capt. Gume aboard the Zaptito Gordo reported 3 BONITOS and 1 SPANISH MACKEREL on a fly with a client from France. Several other captains reported 2-3 SAILFISH per day per boat. The blue water is between 8 to 10 miles out and the sea conditions are excellent.

I/Z Climate: Humid with Temps in the high 80's with no rain.

Sea Conditions: Excellent

Bait Supply: Good

IN GENERAL: The 82º blue water remains close and the fishing is picking up a bit over the last couple of weeks.

Captain German, of the 31-foot “Bacalao II,” told me this morning he has been fishing five days straight, averaging two to three sailfish and one 20- to 25-pound dorado for each day on the water.

Captain Poli, on the “Don Gordo I” fished with Scott and Alicia Morrison, with another couple from Houston and released three sailfish and kept one 27 pound dorado.

No yellowfin tuna were reported this week.

The inshore action has also picked up. The roosterfish bite remains strong, with an average of 4 fish per day taken on poppers or slow trolled live bait. A lot of sierras have moved in, producing great action for both the spin gear and fly-rodders. We are using a 30-pound mono bite tippet on these toothy sierras. The jack crevalle and black skipjack are mixed in with the sierra, getting us more bites than we would by using a wire tippet.

Report Description: A combination a some rainy weather and a port closure hampered the fishing in I/Z last week. On the days when the fleet was able to get out the captains reported seeing good numbers of fish but the bites were on and off. Captain Adolofo Espinosa took First and Second place in the Baja Fly tournament held this past week with client form Dallas Texas. They landed a total of 34 Spanish Mackerel, 6 Jacks, 4 Needlefish, 6 tiger Grouper, 1 Big Eye Jack, 11 Green Jacks and 1 Pampano all on the fly. Captain Arturo Landa on the Janeth also fishing the tournament reported 1 Sailfish that did not count in the scoring. Captain Martin on the ISamar landed 2 Shark and 1 Roosterfish but these were landed on conventional tackle and did not count in the scoring. Captain Alex aboard the Sirena fishing with Jeff Rogers landed 2 SAILFISH and lost tow others in one day offshore. Also fishing aboard the Sirena was Angler Antonio Diaz and sons who landed 3 ROOSTERFISH and 4 YELLOWTAIL JACKS in one day of inshore fishing.
Captain Cheva fishing with Mr. Garrett landed 4 SAILFISH in two offshore days. Fishing with another client Captain Cheva took one SAILFISH and lost three others on the fly in one offshore day. The Princis Iris reported a two SAILFISH day and the Super panga Christian reported landing 3 Roosterfish in one inshore day. The captains reported seeing many more SAILFISH as there numbers continue to build to next months Ixtapa ZIhuatanejo Total Tag & Release tournament. We still have a few good captains open for the tournament.

IN GENERAL: Clean blue water is being found within a few miles of shore with a mix of sailfish, dorado and tuna being caught.

The Jacks or Better Charity Tournament and Guide Challenge will wrap up today (Saturday). While sunny during the day, the last several evenings have produced torrential downpours creating more than usual runoff that has caused less than ideal inshore conditions. So far the fishing has been good and the catching on the slow side. A number of larger roosters and jacks have been found but none landed. The Guide Challenge produced lively competition between the guides throughout the week with the final accuracy casting event to be held later today to determine the winner of the $1,000 prize.

Report Description: Exceptional weather and calm sea conditions along with good offshore action and great inshore action was the order of the day in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo last week. Finishing up his week of fishing, French angler Mr. Barenes fishng aboard the Dos Hermanos 1 for 4 days landed 5 SAILFISH, 8 BONITOS, 5 NEEDLEFISH, 19 ROOSTERFISH and 20 YELLOWTAIL JACKS. Captains Adolofo also fished two other days during the week landed 4 ROOSTERFISH and 4 BONITOS. Several other boats reported an average of 2 SILFISH per day along with increasing numbers of DORADOS. For Bottom fishing enthusiasts Captain Alex of the super panga SIRENA reports non stop action on good sized red snapper at the black rock, just a mile offshore. Many boats are limiting out on these great eating bottom fish.

Final preparations are underway for this year's Ixtapa Zihuatanejo total Tag & Release tournament to be held November 14 - 17th, 2004. We will once again hold a live auction during the tournament with the proceeds going to benefit the Children's Wish Foundation. Interested anglers are encouraged to contact our office as soon as possible for details on boat availability and lodging.

Report Description: First, our apologies for the gap in sportfishing reports over the past few weeks. Power outages from the recent hurricanes as well as a computer virus left our office in a bit of a lurch. We are back in action and thank everyone for your understanding.

Light angler activity coupled with some bad weather hampered the fishing activity in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Last week. Captain Francisco on the Marfel made a long journey ( 25 miles ) offshore and found a pod of Tuna. He landed 5 nice YELLOWFIN. Captain Adolofo fishing with French Client Mr. Barenes landed 2 SAILFISH, 8 BONITOS and 4 ROOSTERS in 4 days of fishing. The Sailfish were found less than 5 miles offshore. Large swells, some rain and lot s of wind made fishing difficult during the week. On MR. Barene's last day of fishing Captain Adolofo teamed up with Captain Cheva, who acted as a mate on this charter. On the way offshore they found a floating Drift net or cimbra as they as called locally. Entangled in the net was a sea turtle which had already died but there was also a very tired porpoise struggling to get free. Captain Cheva dove into the water and freed the porpoise from the net. Tired but other wise OK the porpoise was able to regain it strength and swim off. The local captains have recently demonstrated against the use of these ' Cimbras ' and with the help of local and government officials we are hopeful that they will be banned. Finally, there are still some boats available for this year's Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Total Tag & Release tournament which is a qualifying event for the ROLEX/ IGFA invitational tournament of Champions. Interested anglers are encouraged to contact us as soon as possible for details.

Ixtapa ZIhuatanejo weather: One nice day followed by rain and wind

Bait supply: Good

IN GENERAL: The 80º blue water is still holding a few miles off the beach, and the current lines with debris washed out of the rivers, are still well defined.

The full moon did slow down the sailfish fishing, with only an average of about one or two per boat being caught per day. Steve Carlson, from the Los Angeles area, fished on the “Vamonos II” for five strikes from sailfish in the spread, but managed to only hooked and release one.

The 20 to 35 pound dorado are still holding in the current lines, and most boats are getting two or three per day.

The inshore action for roosters and jack crevalle is heating up as the water turbidity clears. We are still getting some river runoff from nightly rains in the Sierra, but the flows have slowed a bit, discharging less silt than the past few weeks.

The Jacks or Better Charity Tournament and Guide Challenge begin on Wed. Many of the participants will begin arriving tomorrow (10/3) to pre-fish and practice for the event. The Guide Challenge has attracted interesting field of guides from across the US. They all are joining us in search of the “Endless Season” and the honor of being named the top Zihuatanejo Guide of 2004, not to mention the $1,000 that goes with the title. We will provide daily updates beginning Thurs. (10/7)

IN GENERAL: The 80º blue water is still holding 5 miles off the beach. Recent rain storms this last week have created very well defined current lines holding debris washed out of the rivers. These current lines have been holding a lot of 25 to 35 pound dorado.

Adolpho, on the panga “Dos Hermanos,” released 4 sailfish yesterday, and took 4 very nice dorado. He also told me the roosterfish have slowed a little on the beaches, but he had managed 4 this last week in two days of fishing. He feels very confident the bite will pick up again once the shoreline turbidity cleans up.

The average for sailfish is about 2 fish per boat per day.

Between 5 and 7 miles the school sized tuna (about 15 to 20 pounds), have been giving us a lot of action. They have been there several days now, and do not appear to be moving.

Report Description: ZIHUATANEJO, MAINLAND MEXICO

IN GENERAL: There has not been much change in the last few weeks for fishing. The 80º blue water has moved out to about 6 miles due to a few rainstorms we got in the last couple of days.

There is still a very distinct lack of fishermen, but this is normal for this time of the year. Each boat fishing the blue water is getting at least a couple of sailfish a day. A few dorado are starting to show, and with last night's rainstorm recording 5 inches in my gauge, the flows out of the river should push enough debris out to hold the dorado here. The dorado action should really pick up in the next couple of weeks.

However, the high river flows do have a drawback. The silty water tends to hug the coast line and is shutting down the outstanding roosterfish bite we have had for several months now. The roosters are still there, it is just very difficult to get them to see the baits in the dirty water. Hookless teasers skimming the surface on my kite rig seem to be the best bet to find the roosters right now. A 60 foot cast with a fly, and it is an instant hookup.

There is still outstanding jack crevalle action inside Zihuatanejo Bay. Felipe, on the panga Yellowfin took a tour around the bay this morning to drain the water from his panga by pulling the plug. As he was motoring along, he felt he might as well troll a Rapalla. It paid off. In less than 20 minutes he had drained his boat of water, and had an 18 pound jack on the deck.

IN GENERAL: The 80º blue water still remains very close, and the fishing remains decent, but there are virtually no fishermen here charting any boats. I do not think we have over two or three charters a day going out.

The few boats that do go however are averaging two to three sailfish a day. The inshore action is still holding up with excellent roosterfish and jack crevalle action.

I was at the municipal pier yesterday, talking to a bunch of the captains who were just standing around and hoping for a someone to contact them for a charter. With so few people fishing, I needed more information for my fish report. Santiago, on the panga “Gitana,” was giving directions to an American couple where to get their tickets for the panga taxi ride to Las Gatas Beach. He then turned to me and said, 'Well, I guess you are not the only American in town, but they're not fishing.' I didn't get any more information either.
