Click here to enlarge Report Description: The first half of April has seen some good bass fishing action. Most of our trips have been done on Butler Chain and Johns Lake. Although we have seen some rather strange weather for this time of year for us, with a cold front coming thru, the action has remained steady for the most part, with us having to work harder for our bass on the day the cold front slammed us.
Most of our action on Butler Chain has come from docks, wacky rigged Gitem KO’s and weightless Warlocks in Green Pumpkin have done a great job catching bass up to 5 pounds. When docks have slowed in producing bass, we have moved to the cypress trees, tossing baits at the trees and letting it fall straight down to the base of the tree, this has triggered some very good action for us.
Johns Lake has seen scattered schooling action fist thing in the mornings, usually just as the sun makes it half way thru the Deer Island cut. Docks have been excellent producers as well as my drift pattern thru the middle of the main lake, tossing Steel Shads, these baits have caught us a ton of bass out there, as well as a few 1 ½ pound crappie. Offshore scattered grass beds have been holding some bass with the Gitem Twin Liz rigged with 1/8th ounce weight catching them all. We have caught a few bass on 1 ounce spinner baits, but that bite has not been consistent enough to keep us using them.
We have filmed a few more fishing shows which will be airing soon on our other site Thefishingtube.com along with another Skill Zone episode showing how to tie a few more fishing knots. Be sure to check it out as we continue to add more content and videos weekly.

Endless Season Update 04/23/2009
REPORT #1163 'Below the Border' Saltwater Fly-Fishing reports since 1996

East Cape
By all accounts, the past few days have been the best in 2009 so far. With the help of a floating dead whale and flat seas, the dorado action was ‘off the charts’ providing nonstop action on both fly and conventional.
Inshore action continued with its winning ways providing plenty of bait which attracted roosters, jacks and pompano…enough to keep rods bent. Even after being thrashed last week by wind, the beach has turned the corner and those fishing from shore in the past few days have had the kind of action normally not expected until later in the spring

Magdalena Bay, Baja Mexico

Very few anglers went out but the commercial guys are still talking about the dorado around the shark buoys west of the Entrada. Skipjack and small tuna remain in easy striking distance of Boca de Soledad.

The Esteros have also been lightly fished but there were a few grouper and mangrove snapper all the way up to the top end of the bay. There are also a few small halibut on the sandy beaches near the inside of the Boca.

Being the blue water has moved out beyond the 24 mile mark, the blue water fishing is practically non-existent this week for the sport fishing fleet. They are only averaging less than a sailfish a day per boat. The only reports of decent blue water fishing are coming in from the commercial pangueros. They are working an area from 45 to 50 miles out, and scoring on yellowfin tuna and blue marlin.
There is a hot bite going on however. The jack crevalle, chulas and black skipjack tuna are providing lots of action for the light-line fishermen. The majority of the action is taking place between 1/2 to 2 miles off the beach, all up and down the coast. (A chula is an excellent tasting small tuna, between 4 and 6 pounds, with white meat and a serious set of dentures).
Most of the inshore fish are being taken on trolled Rapalas.
Talking to Jaime this morning on the municipal pier, he told me how yesterday they even encountered a school of large jacks at 17 miles. The 25 pound (average) fish were so hungry he ended up with a quadruple hookup on his sailfish baits.

Cabo San Lucas

The striped marlin bite has slowly begun to pick back up with fish showing on the surface on the Cortez side of the Cape. Most of the fish being caught are found tailing on the surface and the bites have been pretty evenly mixed between live and dead bait. On the Pacific side there have been a couple of fish found, but overall everyone pretty much agreed that inside the Pacific side banks the water is too cool for much action. There were reports of a couple of blue and black marlin giving some adrenalin rushes out there.

Once again the yellowfin tuna failed to show in any numbers. There were a few fish found, but they were at quite a distance from Cabo. It took several hours running time to get into the productive waters, such as they were, and once there it took quite a long time to find any fish, it there were any. A few schools were found 40 miles to the southwest, in the 20 to 35 pound class. That meant a long run for the possibility of getting a couple of small tuna…most anglers said never mind.

There were mostly scattered dorado; however, most boats were able to get at least one, and a few boats managed to get three or four. The warm water on the Cortez side produced the fish and the best area was three to five miles off the beach in the same area that held most of the striped marlin.

Wahoo were scattered with a few fish found in the early part of the week in the Punta Gorda, Inman Bank area. These fish averaged 25 pounds and swimming plugs had the best results.

Sierra and yellowtail continued to provide the best inshore action, but there was also a fair bite on amberjack and pargo and a few grouper to add to the mix. Most of the action early in the week was taking place on the Cortez side of the Cape but as the winds died down the bite moved back to the Pacific side off of Los Arcos.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated April 12 – April 19, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been good all week with some rain towards the weekend. The snow pack is starting to melt and the rivers are on the rise. The Steelhead that were holding in deep dark pools are on the move. Both upper and lower sections of Kalum River are in good shape even though the water is rising. The first Chinook should be coming into the Kalum River soon. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is dirty and not fishable. The main stem Skeena River is dirty but is still borderline fishable below Terrace. A good run of spring Steelhead and Chinook (King) Salmon should be coming in now. Good runs of Steelhead are coming into the many isolated coastal streams and rivers. For the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please check out the Ron Wakita report below.

April 16, 2009 One 'New' clip posted on Video Clips:

Rob Vodola and I were fishing for Steelhead on the Kalum River, for the first time this year, on April 13, 2009. We fished a short day but still managed to hook four nice fish and landed two. Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters.

KITIMAT RIVER: The Steelheading on the Kitimat River is starting to get really good with one outstanding fish to report!

Rob Brice landed a 14lb steelhead on the Kitimat River on April 12th. Rob was fishing with his fishing partner Cal Tant who landed a 'bigger Steelhead than Rob' on April 13th on the upper Kitimat River. Cal said he landed this Steelhead in the first pool below the first wash out. Well Done Rob and Cal!

Another angler who wishes to remain anonymous, as he did in last week's report, hooked four
Steelhead and landed two upriver on April 13th. Both fish were released. I respect his request to remain unnamed and I really appreciate his contribution for this report and my log. 'Anonymous' is a pretty long title so I will respectfully refer to him as 'Mr. G'. Congratulations 'Mr. G.' on a great morning of fishing and Thank You for the info.

The info provided to me by anglers helps to identify the strength of the run as well timing of this year's Steelhead run. I also respect that not all anglers especially Steelheaders wish to reveal their favorite fishing holes and I will not reveal them if requested not to do so. The catch information is very important to me for my log and this report.

Duane Teneycke another avid local Steelheader reports landing a 15lb wild Buck on April 14th from the mid Kitimat section.

Last but not least! John Heinonkari caught a Big, Wild, Steelhead pushing 30lbs on the Kitimat River, Saturday April 11th. John said, 'I'm 44 years old and this was the Biggest Steelhead of my life. I have fished the Kitimat Area since the early 70's with my father for over 39 years. This fish was at least 28lb maybe 30; this was the biggest Steelhead of my life!” John caught hundreds of Steelhead over the years. John possesses a quiet almost humble personality and has landed five or six Steelhead over twenty pounds on the Kitimat River. This was the first one that was pushing thirty. Well Done John!

I first heard the news of John landing this Huge Steelhead from local residents, Markus Feldoff and Jody Dennil who were in our tackle store. I have known John for thirty years as we both grew up fishing in Kitimat and I am extremely happy for him. It was like receiving news of someone that you know winning the lottery. In the fishing world landing a Steelhead pushing thirty pounds is like winning the lottery!

When I called John to share the moment, the sense of his accomplishment and excitement was prevalent in our conversation but John seemed almost humbled by the experience. That is the way John is. John did not get a picture as he did not have his camera but says, 'that the memory of this fish will forever be etched in his brain'. Congratulations John!

I don't want to detract anything from John’s accomplishments but it is too bad that he didn't get a picture especially now that every cell phone has a camera. A reminder to all Steelheaders, please remember to pack your camera or use your cell or make sure that your partner has his or her camera. 'The fish of your life' may be on your next cast!

Anyone interested in a Guided Trip on the Kitimat River for Steelhead with Reliable Guide and Charters please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca and he would be more than happy to accommodate.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: There are not a lot of boats fishing the Douglas Channel this week. The boats that are heading out are mostly crabbing and prawning. Tom Blake a local angler reports catching lots of crab and lots of octopus in his prawn traps. Octopus is great bait for bottom fishing but I would rather eat prawns. Tom did also report that he landed a 12lb feeder Chinook this week. As the weather improves, more Salt water anglers and Charters will be heading out.

Fishing Report from: Gill McKean of Westcoast Fishing Adventures

Hello Noel, Me again. We have been very busy getting our guests hooked up to Trophy steelhead!

This spring has been a little crazy weather wise. It has challenged us every day. We have had sunny weather most of this week but the cool nights have kept the snow melt at bay! The boat ramps have been interesting to say the least but with good equipment and a little steelhead book camp training we are getting the job done!! All guests are hooking good numbers of steelhead on the fly indicator method and swinging a leech or sculpin pattern is getting it done. The fish have been aggressive and strong, there has been the odd colored fish but most have been chrome bright and BIG!! Average catch per day has been 3 to 4 fish per angler with the odd day in the double digits.

All Region 6 rivers are starting to fish well now and it’s only getting better!

We still have a few last minute openings for 1 or 2 persons just call Noel 250-635-2568 noel@noelgyger.ca and he will hook you up.

Special thanks to Todd Haynes for the video clip and the photo (see below) of Splash Gordon doing what he does best… hook you up!!

Gill McKean, Fishing is our addiction - Guiding is our passion - Adventure is in our blood

Fishing Report from: Todd Haynes of Nautical West Sport Fishing – April 17th

The Kitimat River is in fantastic condition this week and the weather is just as good for fishing.

We have seen an increase in catches this past week as well as an increase in the number of fishers throughout the river system. Guiding is in full swing now and most are having several fish successes on both fly and conventional gear.

I managed to get some great video footage and a few photos yesterday of Gord McKean and his guests from Alaska.

Spring Chinook fishing is coming soon! Nautical West has dates available for both the Kitimat River and ocean charters. Contact Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca for complete information.

Fishing Report from: Tracey Hittel of Steelhead Heaven

Cabo Fish Report
April 13-19, 2009

WEATHER: We had partly cloudy skies early in the week with the weekend resulting in perfectly clear skies. There was some windy days early with the wind lasting all night during the beginning of the week and tapering off a bit as the week progressed, then at the weekend the wind died to an occasional light breeze. As the winds lessened the temperatures increased. At the beginning of the week we had lows in the mid 60’s and highs in the low 90’s, at the end of the week the lows were in the mid 70’s and the highs in the mid 90’s.
WATER: Surface conditions on the Pacific side were choppy at the beginning of the week, coinciding with the winds we experienced but at the end of the week the chop had gone away and there were just some well spaced 3-5 foot swells with a light breeze on them. On the Cortez side the surface was calm with negligible swells and no chop locally in the mornings, and with some slight chop and swells in the afternoon and early in the week up to the north around Punta Gorda. Water temperatures on the Pacific side remained at 66 degrees out to the San Jaime Bank and past there to the west it warmed to 70 degrees. On the Cortez side the water was a very nice 74 degrees early in the week and on the 16th a hot spot that went to 79 degrees appeared between the 1150 spot and the Cabrilla Seamount. Immediately afterward the surface temperatures dropped and as of the end of the week we had a fairly uniform 70 degrees in the area.
BAIT: There was a mix of Mackerel and Caballito available this week at the normal price of $3 per bait. Sardinas were hard to come by this week.
FISHING:

BILLFISH: The Striped Marlin bite has slowly begun to pick back up with fish showing on the surface on the Cortez side of the Cape. Most of the fish being caught are found tailing on the surface and the bites have been pretty evenly mixed between live and dead bait. On the Pacific side there have been a couple of fish found, but overall everyone pretty much agreed that inside the Pacific side banks the water is too cool for much action. There were reports of a couple of Blue and Black Marlin giving some adrenalin rushes out there and that action was between the 95 spot and the 1150, outside around the 1,000 fathom line.
YELLOWFIN TUNA: Once again the Yellowfin Tuna failed to show in any numbers. There were a few fish found, but they were at quite a distance from Cabo, it took several hours running time to get into the productive waters, such as they were, and once there it took quite a long time to find any fish, it there were any there. 40 miles to the southwest was where a few schools were found, and they were only school fish in the 20-35 pound class. That meant a long run on a possibility of getting a couple of small Tuna, most anglers said never mind. We did have one day of decent fish just to the south of the San Jaime with both Yellowfin and Dorado on the bite, but it was very short lived.
DORADO: Just like last week, once again it was a case of scattered fish. Almost every boat was able to get a Dorado this week, and a few boats managed to get three or four. The warm water on the Cortez side produced the fish and the best area was three to five miles off the beach, the same area that held most of the Striped Marlin.
WAHOO: There were scattered fish found in the early part of the week in the Punta Gorda, Inman Bank area. These fish averaged 25 pounds and swimming plugs had the best results.
INSHORE: The bite is still on for Sierra and Yellowtail, it’s decent for Amberjack and Pargo and there are a few Grouper to add to the mix. Most of the action early in the week was taking place on the Cortez side of the Cape but as the winds died down it moved back to the Pacific side off of Los Arcos.
NOTES: Took the dog to the beach this morning, nice and quiet out there with just a few people walking back and forth. I have a two hour cruise at noon and then will get to watch some golf. I am planning to get a couple of rounds in this week. If anyone out there has every played any of the courses in Sun River, Oregon, I would like to hear from you and get your opinions on them. My wife and I are going there at the end of June for a week long vacation, I need to smell some pine trees and see if I can stand wading in cold water casting a fly! Until next week, tight lines!

REPORT #1162 'Below the Border' Saltwater Fly-Fishing reports since 1996

East Cape

Our clients found the offshore a little cool but the inshore was just right, yielding multiple species on the fly.

Cecilia “Pudge” Kleinkauf, Anchorage, Alaska, visited this week with a group of mostly seasoned Baja anglers with one angler on her first trip to Baja. They caught a variety of fish which included roosterfish, red snapper, pargo, cabrilla, sierra mackerel, pompano and white bonito all round. By the end of the trip almost everyone had achieved a personal best or a new species!

Heggie Wilson, from Park City, Utah, caught a fish on his second cast in the morning and it never slowed down. They fished the reef in front of Leonero until almost 10 a.m. for 5 different species. He ended up the day with 8 different species. it was full speed most of the day!

The fishing and conditions picked up a bit this week. Even though the fleet is only averaging about one or two sailfish a day per boat, this should improve soon.
The warm, 80° blue water is about 12 miles off the beach and several blue marlin are being hooked. The boats are averaging about one marlin hookup for every five boats each day.

Santiago, on the panga Gitana, had one decent day with his clients and released three sailfish. Not to be outdone, his brother Adan on the panga Gitana II, released four sails in one day.

The jack crevalle action bounced back to life, with lots of the larger 15- to 20-pound hard fighting fish being reported around the White Rocks, and on down to Petatlan (about 7.5 and 16 miles south of Zihuatanejo).

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated April 5 – April 12, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been good all week with daytime temperatures near normal. The snow pack is starting to melt and the rivers are on the rise. The Steelhead that were holding in deep dark pools are on the move again. Both upper and lower sections of Kalum River are in good shape even though the water is rising. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is very dirty (copper colour) right now and is coloring up the Skeena River also. The main stem Skeena River, below Terrace and above the Zymoetz River is clean enough to fish for Steelhead. A good run of spring Steelhead should be coming in now. Good runs of Steelhead are coming into the many isolated coastal streams and rivers. For the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please check out the Ron Wakita report below. There are lots of New! items posted on the website this week, please see below.

We don’t sport fish for Herring but I am happy to report commercial Herring fishery out of Prince Rupert was up this year and slightly higher than average. The roe was of good quality and fish were bigger than in recent years. Lots of Herring usually means lots of Salmon.

NOTICE There is a logjam below the highway riprap just above Nalabila Creek. Can barely make it through with a pontoon boat, attempting it with a drift boat would be dangerous. See two photos below:

Friends of Wild Salmon urge you to send a letter now calling for a public inquiry on the proposed Enbridge project to build a supertanker port at Kitimat and two 1,150 km pipelines to Alberta. Cast here to send letter: http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5875/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=1227

FISHING GUIDE REPORTS FOR THIS WEEK ARE FROM:

Ron Wakita
Gill McKean

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Skeena and Tributaries:

TYPE OF FISH CAUGHT: Steelhead and Trout for river. Salmon, Halibut, Bottom Fish and Dungeness Crab for ocean.

Thank you for using barbless hooks.

FISHING THIS WEEK: GOOD

LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: Specie: 20-pound Steelhead Where: Secret River Angler: Gord McKean.

WEATHER: Cloudy. Showers beginning this morning. High 8. Sunrise 6:39 AM Sunset 8:31 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 12 degrees. Minimum 2 degrees.

WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.

SKEENA RIVER: Is rising and starting to colour up as the spring run-off has started. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is coming in dirty. The Skeena River is still fishable above the Zymoetz and below Terrace. Should be a few Steelhead and Trout one can catch.

KALUM RIVER: Is in good shape and is coming up slowly. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Spring runs of Steelhead should be coming in. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well.

This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Is very dirty. The upper section is closed to angling as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon is open.

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters.

KITIMAT RIVER: Easter week has been productive for Steelheaders on the Kitimat River. We received some high tides this week combined with a bump up in the river water level enticed some chrome Steelhead into the Kitimat River. I spoke to a French speaking angler Tommy on Wednesday, who had hooked four steelhead and landed two. Tommy was fishing the lower Kitimat. I spoke to another angler in our tackle store who wished to remain unnamed, who landed a Steelhead on Tuesday and another on Wednesday upriver. On Thursday I spoke to Kevin whose friend from Vernon landed a Steelhead fishing the Cable Car run. Kevin also said that they watched another angler land a big bright female on the other side of the river. This angler was drifting in a pontoon boat and put this wild Steelhead into a black tube and continued on. I explained that the angler was probably one of the Kitimat Hatchery brood collection crew collecting brood stock. The Kitimat Hatchery is looking for volunteers who are interested in assisting with Steelhead brood collection. Any interested anglers please contact me via email wakita@telus.net and I will explain the program and give you the Hatchery contact info. There is a strict protocol to be followed but it is a worthwhile project.

Mike Herzberg of Reliable Guide and Charters fished with his fishing partner on Thursday and Friday. Mike landed a 15lb. buck on Thursday and his fishing partner hooked four Steelhead and landed three on Friday. Mike also warns of a log jam located just below Saw Mill. Anglers drifting the Kitimat River please beware. Mike advises that pontoons with due caution are able to navigate through. High water may also increase the hazard. Thank You for the pictures and the advisory Mike.
.
Overall the Steelheading was very good this week with fresh, bright Steelhead in the system. There should be more Steelheaders fishing the Kitimat River this Easter long weekend. Stay Tuned to this report for further updates.

This is the logjam below the highway riprap just above Nalabila Creek. Can barely make it through with a pontoon boat, attempting it with a drift boat would be dangerous. Someone needs to get in there with a power saw to open it up. Photos by Mike Herzberg.

Anyone interested in a Guided Trip on the Kitimat River for Steelhead with Reliable Guide and Charters please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca and he would be more than happy to accommodate.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Albert Nelson a resident of Kitimaat Village reports large schools of herring spawning in the Kitimat harbour especially in front of the Village. With the herring schooled up along the beach and with some strong winds creating some larger waves, the herring are being washed up onto the beach during the High tides. 'My brother picked up three buckets of herring right off the soccer field' said Arnold. The Kitimaat Village soccer fields are located along the shore line and with the abnormally high tides this week and high waves has created this phenomenon. Albert was in our tackle store buying herring jigs to catch the herring and was looking for a bucket for when the winds picked up again. Wow! This is first time I have heard of this happening and I was born and raised in Kitimat.

With the herring in the Kitimat Harbour, smart money says that there should be some feeder chinook in the Kitimat Harbour feeding on the herring. Many boaters were heading out for the weekend. Upon their return I will update this report. Stay Tuned.

The early indicators of the Herring run are that it is very strong this year. Herring bait fishers have reported good catches as have the commercial herring boats. This may be good signs of things to come with this season's Salmon runs. Usually when the herring run is strong the salmon returns are also very strong. Here's to a 'Great Salmon Fishing Season'

 Apr 11, 2009; 03:22PM - Orlando Bass Fishing
 Category:  Florida
 Author Name:  Capt Tim Fey
 Author E-mail:  tim@bassfishingfl.com
Click here to enlarge Report Description: The month of February has seen some very good bass fishing action here in Orlando. We have had most of our focus on Butler Chain and one of the private lakes that I fish. Butler Chain we have had some good bass come off beds, despite high winds that had consistently pounded us along with what seemed like an endless run on cold fronts.
Most of our trips this month were with artificial baits, with steel shad and a wide range of Gitem Baits catching most of the bass. Steel Shad have been doing a great job in deeper waters when fronts have hit us, working them mostly in 10 to 16 feet of water, almost slow rolling them, with the very tight wobble and close resemblance of bait fish, these baits have been awesome.
Gitem Baits have been plugging the bass for us in and around scattered grass beds, offshore hydrilla beds and docks. The Twin Liz and the Curly 7 have been doing great tossing them under docks texas rigged with a 1/16th ounce screw in weight. The Gitem Curly 10 has been great pulling it thru heavy eel grass to catch some nice quality bass, one day numbers will be up, and size down, but only to be followed up with some very solid bass being caught the next day.
We have found when the fronts have rolled thru, the bass were pushed away from the beds, but still in the area, so setting up 30 feet off the bedding areas had been the key to catching the quality bass, with some good schooling action towards the end of the month. Shiner fishing has been doing good, slow trolling the shiners with no float around deep drop offs on Lake Butler itself has produced some quality bass. Lakes Chase and Blanche have also held some good action, Chase has been good in areas where the lay downs are as well as Blanche. Blanche has been very good around the docks as well as just offshore from the docks, finding the offshore hydrilla has produced some very good quality bass.
The month of March has carried over pretty much from the same action we have seen in February, although the majority of the bass had already spawned, we still were catching some bass off beds, or cruising around the beds. Butler Chain we have been catching most bass just off the grass beds and under docks, wacky rigged Gitem KO’s have been doing great under docks as well as the curly 7’s.
Johns Lake has started showing some limited schooling action in the Dear Island cut, steel shad and High Roller Rip Rollers have got some good action. A few docks have produced on Johns Lake for us the past month, but one of the biggest patterns seems to have been isolated grass patches worked with either the KO’s or the curly 7’s in Florida Grass color. A few bass have been caught on smaller crank baits in 2 to 4 foot of water as well.
Both Butler and Johns Lake the Crappie bite has been limited and very scattered, some being caught early morning in deep water, while majority have been caught around the grass beds, size of crappie has been down the last 2 weeks.
Private waters have been producing some very good numbers, along with some size, all bass have been caught on artificial baits with bass coming from docks and grass beds. Wacky rigged KO’s and Shad have been the way to catch them.
My reports have been slow coming the past 2 months but I should be back on schedule with them now, we have launched a new web site Thefishingtube.com which has taken up most of my free time. This web site is totally free so we want everyone to come join us, create yourself a member user name and set up your profile, you can upload pictures and videos. We currently have a teaser show filmed and uploaded with Pro Golfer JB Holmes and on our Skill Zone I am Hosting How to Videos. I would also like to welcome Deep South Fishing Rods to our family, as a sponsor on both our Fishing Show and my Guide Service. These rods are awesome, so please check them out.

Endless Season Update 04/09/2009
REPORT #1161 'Below the Border' Saltwater Fly-Fishing reports since 1996

East Cape

Best action reported is to the north, close to the 88. Loads of dorado and some marlin.
Closer to shore, anything floating seems to be holding schools of small dorado.
Same story inshore with a continuing run of quality roosters mixed in with some big-shouldered jacks north of Punta Pescadero all the way to Muertos.

Magdalena Bay, Baja Mexico

Outside, the dorado can be found around the shark buoys and the small yellowfin tuna are within ten miles of Boca de Soledad. There’s still some decent action at the Entrada for small yellows and some remaining sierra.

Estero action has been spotty. The few anglers fishing there found small snook, grouper and snapper at Devil’s Curve.

Water temperature 67 - 73
Air temperature 52 -81
Humidity 55 %
Wind: WNW 14 to 19 knots
Conditions: Partly Sunny
Visibility 10 miles
Sunrise 7:10 a.m. MST
Sunset 7:47 p.m. MST

Zihuatanejo, Mainland Mexico

For all species, the fishing here has really been very slow this week. Historically, this is a typical April trend. Then when the cooler water current moves out, the fishing rebounds after the first week of May.

The blue water is still holding between 10 and 12 miles out, but the average is only about 1 sailfish per boat, per day. I was on the beach early this morning watching the night fishermen bring in their catch, and even it was very small. However, this could be attributed to the full moon phase. There was one commercial fisherman who had a few football sized yellowfin tuna, but he said he had to go 50 miles to find them.

Even the inshore jack crevalle action, which has been so hot the last few weeks, completely shut off this week.

Cabo San Lucas

This time of year the Sea of Cortez, specifically up at the Punta Gorda area around the Inman Banks is where you’ll find the best striped marlin action…mostly tailing fish and you’ll need to be pretty accurate with your casts. However, if you manage to get bait within 10 feet, the chances are pretty good of getting a hookup. The better scoring boats are releasing 5 to 7 fish per day; others, one or two.

A few nice yellowfin were recently caught at the Gorda Banks, nothing earthshaking but some decent fish to 50 pounds. There were also several pods of dolphin that did have fish with them, 10 to 20 pound football-sized fish. Most were on the Cortez side of the cape.

There have been scattered 20+ pound dorado in the warmer waters offshore on the Sea of Cortez. Hook one up and there’s a fair chance of getting another following behind the hooked one. Spotting the frigates feeding was the key, although blind trolling resulted in some as well.

Inshore action has definitely been good. Sierra and yellowtail continue to dominate the inshore action. While not large, the sierra are in great numbers once the schools were found. There has been great action just outside the beach on the Pacific side at Pueblo Bonita Sunset Resort and on the Cortez side outside the Cabo Del Sol Golf Course. Most boats have been able to get limits for their anglers using sardina as live bait, but blue/silver swimming plugs and hootchies did well also. A few yellowtail in the 8 to 10 pound class with a few fish to 25 pounds and an occasional fish that could not be stopped. Added to the mix of fish caught were the occasional pargo and amberjack as well as some small roosterfish.

Noel Gyger - WEEKLY FISHING REPORT dated March 29 – April 5, 2009

Dear Fishing Friends:

SUMMARY: The weather has been fair all week. The most important thing is the temperatures are getting warmer and the water is rising. Trouble is the water is rising slowly and is still too low for jet boats but rafts and drift boats are doing OK. Fish guiding has started “big time”. The guides are working very hard to get their clients the best guided fishing experience possible despite conditions. With the current low water this has been a challenge. Despite conditions, pro guide Tracey Hittel has gotten his clients into many Steelhead. See his full report below. Both upper and lower sections of Kalum River are in good shape but the water is very low. The lower Zymoetz (Copper) River is still holding a few Steelhead and a few fresh ones are coming in now. I have a report of a few fish being caught on the fly rod and spin gear. Most of the ice that was floating in the river has melted. A few fishermen are now starting to fish on the main stem Skeena River looking for that spring run Steelhead. In the meantime lots of Cutthroat and Dolly Varden Char to keep the fishermen entertained while waiting for Steelhead. For the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please check out the Ron Wakita report below.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) 2009 Salmon Stock Outlook:

Skeena Region:

• Sockeye: variable 2 million fish expected
• Chinook: variable; average returns similar to recent years are anticipated
• Coho: outlook is good for the middle and upper Skeena stocks. Outlook for lower Skeena trib is less certain.

Todd Haynes
Tracey Hittel

CURRENT REPORT and summary for Skeena and Tributaries:

TYPE OF FISH CAUGHT: Steelhead and Trout for river. Salmon, Halibut, Bottom Fish and Dungeness Crab for ocean.

Thank you for using barbless hooks.

FISHING THIS WEEK: FAIR

LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: Specie: 15-pound Steelhead Where: Kitimat River Angler: Jesse Houston.

WEATHER: Cloudy. Periods of rain near Stewart. 60 percent chance of showers this afternoon. High 8. Sunrise 6:56 AM Sunset 8:18 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 11 degrees. Minimum 0.7 degrees.

WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.

SKEENA RIVER: Is in good shape, low and clean but still frozen over in spots. Be very careful walking on those ice shelves. Should be a few Steelhead and Trout one can catch.

KALUM RIVER: Is in good shape. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well. The water is extremely low and the fish are easily spooked. Walking around is getting a little easier as a lot of the snow has melted. The boat ramps are getting easier to access.

This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Is fishing well for Steelhead right now. The upper section is closed to angling as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon will stay open for the winter Steelheaders to enjoy.

Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters.

KITIMAT RIVER: We received sunny weather most days this week except April 1st. April Fools Day morning received another snowfall. Mother Nature has a warped sense of humor but she was only kidding because most of the snow melted away by noon.

In addition to the snow on Wednesday morning, April 1st was the first day that Fresh Water Licenses had to be obtained online. With every dealer in the province logging on to the government server at the same time overloaded the system. Long delays, constant error messages and inability to print licenses were an exercise in frustration at our Tackle Store as well as for anyone else trying to obtain a Fresh Water License. We had better success after hours. Anyone wishing to obtain their Fishing License please be patient and allow plenty of time. Please, for your own sanity, do not leave it until the last minute.

Despite the snow and the difficulty with Fresh Water Licenses, Steelhead fishing on the Kitimat River picked up a bit this week. Jesse Houston an employee of our Tackle Store caught another Steelhead on Tuesday. He was fishing with one of his fishing partners, Tom Keohane and his brother Kodi Houston and they both lost a Steelhead. They were fishing on the Island across from the Kitimat Hatchery and they were all using the Bubble Gum Pink worm.

I spoke to two other anglers in the store on Tuesday who fished the gravel bar below the Kitimat Hatchery and they also lost a Steelhead. Wally from Spey Lodge was in the store on Wednesday after he drifted the Kitimat and he landed a Steelhead. Todd Haynes of Nautical West Fishing Adventures also drifted and reports landing two Steelhead. Another angler reports having landing three Steelhead already this season.

Many other anglers are planning to head out fishing the Kitimat River this weekend and the warm temperatures should help. The Kitimat River water level remains very low and a little snow melt would help. In the North West a person has to be careful what he wishes for. A little rise in the water level would be nice but we received a substantial snow pack in the mountains this winter and too much warm weather would not be good either. I would hope that the snow melt is gradual and the river remains fishable throughout the snow melt which is more typical on the Kitimat. The Steelhead fishing will continue to get better as usually Easter weekend is when Steelheading usually starts to get really good.

The water level is too low to drift with driftboats and most anglers that are drifting are doing so with pontoon boats or inflatables.

Anyone interested in a Guided Trip on the Kitimat River for Steelhead with Reliable Guide and Charters please Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca and he would be more than happy to accommodate.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Crabbing is the main focus with many boaters. We have not received any more reports of King crab since we reported Rick Taylor's catch in last week's report. Dungeness crab is the target especially since it has been a long winter and fresh crab has not been on the menu.

Most boaters are just starting to get their boats ready for this years fishing season. I spoke to many boaters who are planning Halibut trips for Easter weekend.

Anglers are reminded that the new 2009 to 2011 Tidal Synopsis are available. Tidal Water licenses are still being issued on paper with no delays. Sometimes the proven but true methods are still the best way of doing things especially with fishing.

Fishing Report from: Tracey Hittel of Steelhead Heaven
Spring Steelhead Report from Steelhead Heaven BC Canada 2009
We started week 1 of our guiding season with a bang as our clients from Vancouver landed some very large Steelhead this weekend. Rod Toth of Bent Rods showed us that his jigs are the top producers when it comes to fishing for Steelhead. Rod landed a 21.4lb Steelhead, a 19.5lb Steelhead and a 17lb Steelhead not to mention other small males and fresh females arriving from the sea.
Rod felt very confident in his jigs and the nice thing is that they are all made in the lower mainland by his family and friends. When you tie thousands of these every year you need extra help. Rod fished different varieties of jigs with his float, centre-pin reel and 13.5 ft rod, his magic colors were pink, green and olive. We concentrated on the deep pools some as deep as 19.5ft, yes! And this was where the big boys were holding.
His fishing partner for the trip was Wes the Bass Pro Master, well versed in Eastern Canada Steelhead. This young lad was as organized as any fisherman I have ever guided. His style and technique was flawless and a great tip I learned was that the guys would use fly floatant on the line approx 25ft of it, to ensure the dead drift they wanted to present in the water was always there, with little or no drag on the surface of the water. Wes tied the most amazing Tarentino bags, as he calls them to keep his secrets close to his chest, moms the word with me. Wes hooked some large males during the trip and some he landed and some were long line releases. One of the fish Wes landed had sea lice on it so that day we did catch a lot of fresh chrome hen Steelhead.
Spoonman and Billy Bob were partnered with Bark Bark, these guys hooked some very nice Steelhead and Spoonman fished with the metal his entire trip and fished some of the nicest spoons, all special ordered and in various weights and size. Billy Bob is pictured with one of the chromers the guys landed that day, a fresh run for sure.
With the spring melt soon to happen, we fished very cold water conditions at 36F and some of the lowest river levels all year. As April arrives and the sun melts the snow off the mountains we should get a nice bump in water levels and a push of fresh Steelhead, so anglers can expect some excellent conditions in the next week.
I still have a few dates open, please contact Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca to book them. Thanks. Tracey Hittel

Full report from Troy Adams and his fishing buddy Whitey:

Hi Noel, already spring how time flies. Well I had not gotten a chance to tell you about my fall trip last year, the one where Whitey and I spoiled ourselves to 14 days straight on the river with Andrew at the Kalum River Lodge. I can tell you the conditions were changing daily, it was beautiful one day and then 3 days and nights of rain, then rain and wind, and overcast then nice again. But we had an unbelievable trip, the river went up 2ft. and we watched large trees wash off the cut banks into the river while we caught fish every day. The weather doesn't affect you when the fishing is so good. We honesty landed at least 10 fish each a day. There was 3 days I landed 5 Steelhead myself; I set my new personal best 23.5lb. Steelhead, 30lb. Skeena River Chum, 14lb. sockeye. We took on numerous Coho’s in the high teens and as usual we still lost more fish than we caught. I took over 227 pictures, had a moose swim through the run, a deer swim by, saw bear, beaver, eagles, and every day was a new adventure. Even with adverse conditions Andrew was able to get us good fly water every day, that is where 20+ years on the river and the ability to read the water really pays off, no need to say that we are already signed up for this year. You know I could go on and on but I will save it till we come up and I'll get Andrew to bring you out with us for a day or two of fishing. I will include a picture of Whitey and Andrew with a Skeena River sea lice covered Steelhead that will test backing that you don't know you have. By the way last night I went to the Fly Fishing Film Tour, and it had a lot of good fishing clips of all over, including B.C. Dry fly and wet fly for Steelhead, but one film is on northern California, where I live called Rivers of a Lost Coast about the beginning of fly fishing plus rise and fall of the Salmon and Steelhead fishery with commentary by people like Lani Waller and Jim Adams, whom you know to also be very familiar with the Skeena and her tributaries, one of the last great rivers with no dams or hatcheries, maybe check out the clip on the web it is also an interesting look at what happens to unprotected watersheds, you can also see more on the film tours web site. I am sure everyone up there is lining up rod's and getting ready for those Huge Spring Steelhead, so stay warm and we will talk soon, thanks’ Troy Adams

Catch & Release formula:

- Chinook: girth squared x length x 1.54 divided by 1000 (inches)
- Steelhead: girth squared x length x 1.33 divided by 1000 (inches)
